Summary And Critique Of Land And Population - 1670 Words

Summary and Critique of K.H Connell’s Work â€Å"Land and Population in Ireland, 1780-1845† K.H. Connell, in his paper â€Å"Land and Population in Ireland, 1780-1845†, describes and explains the significant population growth in Ireland prior to the famine of 1845 and how the uses of the Irish land changed with the population growth. When presenting the Irish population in the given time period, Connell uses estimates based on the returns of heath-money collectors between 1725-1791 and official census data for the remaining time frame. After correction for errors in these estimates, the figures show a significant increase in population growth rate starting in 1780’s (p.278). This, Connell believes, could be caused by two factors: declining mortality and rising fertility (p.279). He goes on to refute the possibility that rising fertility could be due to a decline in sterility or an increase in extra-marital births (p.279). The former argument should be accepted with caution, as the reports about sterility were from specific towns in Ireland and were then generalized. However, we could accept that the scarcity of these reports may point to no existing changes. He also names â€Å"the tendency of early and general marriage† (p.279) to have caused the low levels of extra-marital relationships. Although the abundance of marriage does not exclude the possibility of extra-marital births, there is indeed little reason to believe that there was an increase in this number. He also rejects theShow MoreRelatedProasvala Essay739 Words   |  3 Pages3.4. Critiques and contestation ProSAVANA has sparked much controversy between civil society and governments.
